All Saints Church

The oldest part of the church is the lower section of the tower, dating from the 13th century, which still retains its original narrow tower arch and a small lancet window. The tower was extended upward in the 14th century, and the church underwent significant enlargement during the 15th century.

The 19th century brought substantial restoration by W. A. Nicholson and Sir George Gilbert Scott, during which the nave arcading, most of the windows, and the south porch were added or renewed. A striking later addition is the mosaic and marble reredos, its Italian workmanship recalling that of St Mark’s, Venice.

The font is octagonal, dating from the 13th–15th century, with a modern wrought-iron cover. Most of the windows carry stained glass illustrating biblical scenes and saints, including the Nativity with shepherds and wise men, the Crucifixion, and six saints — St Stephen, St Paul, St John the Baptist, St Alban, St Elphege and Edward the Confessor.
